An American photographer and a writer on photographic technique. He was noted for his dynamic black-and-white scenes of Manhattan

Bill Brandt

(2 May 1904 – 20 December 1983).

A British photographer and photojournalist. Born in Germany, Brandt moved to England, where he became known for his images of British society for such magazine as Lilliput and Picture Post. He is widely considered to be one of the most important British photographers of the 20th century. (Bill Brandt, 2016)

Bill Cunningham

(March 13, 1929 – June 25, 2016).

An American fashion photographer for The New York Times, known for his candid and street photography. His work came to the attention of The New York Times with a 1978 capture of Greta Garbo in an unguarded moment.

Dorothea Lange

(May 26, 1895 – October 11, 1965).

An American documentary photographer and photojournalist. Lange’s photographs humanized the consequences of the Great Depression and influenced the development of documentary photography.

Henri Cartier-Bresson

(August 22, 1908 – August 3, 2004).

 

A French humanist photographer considered a master of candid photography and an early user of 35 mm film. He pioneered the genre of street photography. His work has influenced many photographers.

Joel Meyerowitz

(March 6, 1938 –).

 

A street photographer, portrait and landscape photographer. He began photographing in color in 1962.

 

 

 


Lee Friedlander

(July 14, 1934 –).

An American photographer and artist. In the 1960s and 1970s Friedlander evolved an influential and often imitated visual language of urban “social landscape,” with many of his photographs including fragments of store-front reflections, structures framed by fences, posters and street signs.

 

 

 

 


Lewis Baltz

(September 12, 1945 – November 22, 2014).

A visual artist and photographer who became an important figure in the New Topographics movement of the late 1970s.

 

 

 

 

 


Martin Parr

 

(23 May 1952 –).

A British documentary photographer, photojournalist and photobook collector. He is known for his photographic projects that take an intimate, satirical and anthropological look at aspects of modern life.

 

 

 

 

 


Otto Steinert

(12 July 1915 – 3 March 1978).

A German photographer. Born in Saarbrücken, Germany. After World War II, he initially worked for the State School for Art and Craft in Saarbrücken.

He was the founder of the Fotoform photography group.

 

 

 

 


 

Vivian Maier

(February 1, 1926 – April 21, 2009).

 

An American street photographer. She took more than 150,000 photographs during her lifetime, primarily of the people and architecture of New York City, Chicago, and Los Angeles, although she also traveled and photographed worldwide. During her lifetime, Maier’s photographs were unknown and unpublished, and she never printed many of her negatives

 

 

 


 

William Eggleston

(born July 27, 1939 –).

 

An American photographer. He is widely credited with increasing recognition for color photography as a legitimate artistic medium to display in art galleries.

 

 

 

 

 

 


 

William Klein

(April 19, 1928 –).

 

An American-born French photographer and filmmaker noted for his ironic approach to both media and his extensive use of unusual photographic techniques in the context of photojournalism and fashion photography.

 

 

 

 

 


 

I decided to do a general search for street photographers so I could look at their work before I choose who to focus on. I feel if I have an interest in their work I will produce a better more rounded project.

My chosen photographers are Martin ParrHenri Cartier-Bresson & Linda Wisdom. I will produce three new pages one for each photographer and link to them from here.
