And indeed, the word “specialized” describes the Sigma 14mm f/1.4 Art perfectly. It’s not your typical 14mm prime – it’s a Milky Way photography lens, pure and simple. Everything from the lens’s construction to its optical strengths and weaknesses prioritize photographing the night sky. That will become increasingly clear throughout this review.

Optically, this is a very complex lens. It features 19 elements in 15 groups, including three aspherical elements. Sigma has added their most advanced coatings and low-dispersion elements to improve the lens’s optical quality. The price is $1600, which is a little high for Sigma but substantially lower than the lens would have cost if made by Nikon, Canon, or Sony. (By comparison, Sony’s 14mm f/1.8 GM is 2/3 stop slower and also costs $1600.)

For this review, I tested the Sigma 14mm f/1.4 Art extensively both in the lab and in the field. The version I used was for Sony E Mount, but I also tested it on the Nikon Z8 using Megadap’s adapter. Normally, I would rather use native lenses instead of adapted glass. However, Nikon doesn’t have any lenses like this one yet, and I wanted to put it to the test for any Nikon Z Milky Way photographers who were curious about its performance.

Does the Sigma 14mm f/1.4 Art live up to its promise as a top-tier Milky Way photography lens? Are there any drawbacks to adapting it to the Nikon Z system? This review will answer those questions and more.

Build Quality

The Sigma 14mm f/1.4 Art is constructed mainly of high-quality plastics, specifically Sigma’s Thermally Stable Composite. Sigma uses this material in many of their lenses, but astrophotographers in particular may appreciate it. Unlike cheaper plastics, this material does not expand or contract significantly when the temperature changes. This is great when photographing the Milky Way – you don’t need to worry about your focus point shifting as the night grows colder.

That said, the material of the lens isn’t what most photographers will notice first. What stands out more than anything else is the lens’s size. It measures 101 x 152 mm in size (4.0 x 6.0 inches) and weighs 1160 grams (2.56 pounds). This makes it the largest and heaviest 14mm lens available today, including zooms. Only the previous generation DSLR lens, the Sigma 14mm f/1.8 Art, gives it a run for its money; both lenses weigh the same, although the f/1.4 version is a hair bigger.

If you’re planning to use this lens in adverse conditions, you needn’t worry. The Sigma 14mm f/1.4 Art is extensively weather sealed, and it focuses internally. I used it in snowy conditions, extreme cold, and dusty environments. It handled everything perfectly and still looked brand new by the end of all my tests.

I was also very impressed to see that the (removable) tripod foot on the Sigma 14mm f/1.4 Art is Arca-Swiss compatible. No need to buy an extra Arca-Swiss plate to attach to the bottom! And I’m glad that Sigma included a tripod foot in the first place. The 14mm f/1.4 Art is quite front-heavy and would be pretty imbalanced otherwise. Is the tripod foot strictly necessary? Probably not – I don’t think the lens is so heavy that your lens mount is in danger of warping. But it’s still helpful in balancing your setup properly.

My only concern with the lens’s build quality is not really something that could be avoided, but the front element is pretty large and exposed. You should be careful using this lens in very windy conditions if there are particles like sand or ice crystals blowing around. The lens didn’t scratch during my time with it, but I would still watch out carefully in rough, windy weather.

The Sigma 14mm f/1.4 Art does not accept traditional front filters, which means that it’s difficult to use a UV or clear protection filter on this lens – or a polarizer. If you need to use such a filter, there are some expensive systems like this one from NiSi that are tailored to the Sigma 14mm f/1.4 Art. However, they require huge 150x150mm or 150x170mm filters, which are not practical for a lot of photographers.

There is, at least, a rear holder on this lens that accepts clip-in filters. That could be enough if all you need are ND filters. I also found a clip-in light pollution filter from Haida that is compatible with this lens (as well as the Sigma 14-24mm f/2.8 Art and Sigma 24mm f/1.4 Art, which share a rear filter design). Light pollution filters aren’t the only filters that Milky Way photographers use, but they’re the most popular, so it’s good to have the option if you want it.

Interestingly, the bulky lens cap that accompanies the Sigma 14mm f/1.4 Art has a pair of slots where you can store small gel filters. It isn’t very roomy, however, and some rear filters won’t fit. Sigma also doesn’t recommend it for long-term filter storage. Personally, I would have preferred a simpler slip-on lens cap instead of Sigma’s heavier, more complex design. But it’s not like you’re choosing this lens in the first place if your goal is to save weight.

Finally, some Milky Way photographers – especially timelapse shooters – like to use lens heating rings to prevent condensation from building up on the front element of a lens overnight. Sigma advertises the 14mm f/1.4 Art as having a “lens heater retainer” for such heaters. Namely, the barrel of the lens is sharply tapered at the end, and it has a textured grip to prevent the heater from slipping out of place.

However, don’t get the wrong idea from Sigma’s advertising; the “retainer” that they mention is simply the shape of the lens barrel. If you were expecting some clips to hold a lens heater in place, you won’t find any here. Even so, it’s much better than most Milky Way lenses that don’t take lens heaters into consideration at all. As long as you strap the heater firmly, you don’t need to worry about it interfering with your focusing ring or appearing in your photo by accident.

All told, the Sigma 14mm f/1.4 Art is a very well-built lens that was thoughtfully designed for Milky Way photography. Even apart from the image quality (which I’ll cover on the next page of this review), I could see dedicated night sky photographers choosing this lens just for the quality-of-life features. The only concern is its bulk – this is not a lens you’ll carry in your bag on a whim. If you can get by with f/1.8 or f/2.8 instead of f/1.4, there much smaller 14mm lenses on the market today.

Handling

Sigma threw everything they could think of at the 14mm f/1.4 Art. It has as many controls as an exotic supertelephoto. What’s more, the controls are genuinely useful. Here’s the layout of the left-hand side of the lens:

This unlabeled switch is a partial lock of the aperture ring. I say partial because, when engaged, it either locks you to the “A” setting (where you control aperture via the camera), or it locks you to the rest of the aperture settings. In the latter case, you can still rotate the ring from f/1.4 to f/16, just not to “A.”

I give Sigma full marks for the handling and controls of the 14mm f/1.4 Art. They even added a bit of white paint beneath each switch to indicate when it’s engaged in one direction or the other. It’s a nice touch for a lens that will be used so often in low light.

Focusing Characteristics

The Sigma 14mm f/1.4 Art autofocuses quickly and very quietly, with impressive accuracy both in the viewfinder and in live view. The accuracy was high even in a lab environment which magnifies small focusing errors. I found that it was on par with any name-brand lens when autofocusing on the Sony a7R V. (Autofocusing on the Nikon Z8 with the Megadap adapter was more of a mixed bag, but that is typical of adapted lenses.)

Because of the f/1.4 maximum aperture, the Sigma 14mm f/1.4 Art focuses in very dark conditions without any issue. I even found that I was able to autofocus on the stars at times – although careful manual focus gave me better accuracy and consistency overall. The manual focus ring has plenty of room for careful adjustments, which is ideal when trying to pinpoint focus on a star.

In terms of close focusing capabilities, there are much better choices out there. The Sigma 14mm f/1.4 Art has a maximum magnification of 0.08x (1:12) which is objectively bad, among the worst maximum magnification we’ve seen. At its closest focusing distance, you can fill the frame with a subject that is approximately 43 cm (17 inches) wide, assuming a full-frame sensor.

No big deal – this isn’t meant to be a wide-angle macro lens. Or even a wide-angle pet photography lens. Sigma had one thing in mind when designing the 14mm f/1.4 Art, and that was Milky Way photography.

Distortion

The Sigma 14mm f/1.4 Art has moderately high distortion, measuring -2.83% barrel distortion in our lab tests. This is high enough to need corrections if you’re photographing architecture, or if the horizon is flat in your photo. It’s a tad higher than most 14mm primes, but still less than we see on a typical 14mm zoom.

Vignetting

In uncorrected images, the Sigma 14mm f/1.4 Art has high levels of vignetting wide open, improving quickly as you stop down. Here’s a full chart of vignetting levels:

The maximum of 2.43 stops is certainly high, but I’m impressed by how quickly the lens gets vignetting under control. At f/2, you’ll get 1.66 stops of vignetting at infinity focus, which is very manageable. By comparison, the Sony 14mm f/1.8 GM measures 2.06 stops of vignetting at f/2 and infinity focus, so the Sigma is about 1/3 stop better.

Normally, we only show vignetting results at maximum aperture and full-stop intervals. However, a lot of Milky Way photographers like to stop down just slightly and would be curious about vignetting at the intermediate apertures. So, I also tested this lens at f/1.6 and f/1.8. At those apertures and infinity focus, it measures 2.16 and 1.87 stops of vignetting respectively.

This is about 1/3 stop better than the Sony 14mm f/1.8 GM, which measures 2.21 stops of vignetting at its maximum aperture of f/1.8.

Lateral Chromatic Aberration

There is a small amount of lateral chromatic aberration on the Sigma 14mm f/1.4 Art, hovering right around the point where it is not even noticeable. Here’s the chart:

Anything under about one pixel is unlikely to need corrections, even on a high-contrast subject. The Sigma 14mm f/1.4 Art is a little higher than that at f/1.4 and f/2, but a little below that mark at each subsequent aperture. This is strong performance for such a complex lens. Chromatic aberration is not a concern.

Sharpness

The Sigma 14mm f/1.4 Art is a sharp lens even at f/1.4. Here’s how it performs in our Imatest measurements:

This is a strong performance that improves steadily as you stop down, with f/4 being the sharpest in the center and f/5.6 being the sharpest in the corners. However, I found myself often stopping down even further when using this lens, since 14mm tends to capture a lot of nearby foreground. Using f/16 is not out of the question even though the lens (like all lenses) loses some sharpness due to diffraction at such a narrow aperture.

The result shown above will be put into context on the next page of this review, but it’s a very sharp lens overall.

In terms of other sharpness issues, there is some meaningful focus shift with this lens, but only at close focusing distances. Thankfully, at infinity focus, I don’t notice any focus shift at all. This means you can safely focus on the stars at f/1.4, stop down to a narrower aperture like f/2 or f/2.8, and still get totally sharp results.

Finally, I saw a bit of traditional-shaped field curvature on the Sigma 14mm f/1.4 Art at the medium apertures (f/4 through f/8), which slightly reduces the corner sharpness at those apertures in the graph above. There is also field curvature at the wider apertures, but with a wavy shape that impacts midframe sharpness more than the corners.

Coma

Related to sharpness is coma, a lens aberration that can make dots of light in the corner of a photo look like smears. Coma isn’t usually visible in everyday photography, but for something like Milky Way photography, it can be a factor. Considering that the whole point of this lens is Milky Way photography, I was eager to put its coma performance to the test.

The crops shown below are taken from the following sections of the image:

I took all the photos in this section at a quick exposure (for Milky Way photography, at least) of six seconds in order to eliminate motion blur. To compensate for the loss of light, I used higher-than-usual ISO values. While this does lead to more noise, the crops below have no star trailing as a result. This allows you to examine the effects of coma and other lens aberrations independently of any motion of the stars.

Let’s look at the center of the image first for reference, then examine the top left corner. Here’s a central crop at f/1.4:

This is already excellent performance. To keep this page manageable in length, I won’t be adding central crops at other apertures – there’s no need, it already looks great wide-open.

This is excellent coma performance. It’s not perfect at f/1.4, but still completely usable. It really sharpens up at f/2, and the f/2.8 performance is perfect.

But how does it compare to some alternatives? Namely, I wanted to test the previous generation DSLR lens, the Sigma 14mm f/1.8 Art, as well as the Sony 14mm f/1.8 GM. Here’s how those lenses perform.

Test 2: Sigma 14mm f/1.8 Art on Sony a7R V

The Sigma 14mm f/1.8 Art is an older, DSLR-designed lens that Sigma eventually released in Sony E mount. It’s just as large and heavy as the newer f/1.4 version. Because of that, it’s definitely less practical in today’s world.

However, it still makes for a good comparison because of its long-running popularity among Milky Way photographers. (See our review.) How does it hold up? Here’s a crop from the center of the Sigma 14mm f/1.8 Art, taken wide open at f/1.8:

As with the f/1.4 version, the central performance is excellent even wide-open. Nothing to worry about here at all.

The corners here are clearly worse than they are on the newer Sigma 14mm f/1.4 Art. While they are usable even at f/1.8, the reality is that the f/2.8 performance above is about the same as the f/1.4 performance of the Sigma 14mm f/1.4 Art. The newer version is just that much better.

In my review of the Sony 14mm f/1.8 GM, I gave it full marks for its excellent coma performance. How does it compare to the Sigma 14mm f/1.4 Art? First, let’s double check that the center looks good wide-open:

It does indeed! The real question is the extreme corner. Here’s how it looks at f/1.8, f/2, and f/2.8:

The images above speak for themselves, but this is really fantastic coma performance – actually a bit better than what we see on the Sigma 14mm f/1.4 Art. (At least, that’s the case at f/1.8 and f/2. Once you’re stopped down to f/2.8, the two lenses are equivalent.)

I wouldn’t call these differences drastic, but they’re enough for the Sony 14mm f/1.8 GM take the crown among the lenses tested here. That said, you will get about 1/3 stop extra vignetting on the Sony compared to the Sigma 14mm f/1.4 Art at f/1.8 and f/2, so keep that in mind.

Test 4: Sigma 14mm f/1.4 Art on Nikon Z8

Lastly, I was interested to see how well the Sigma 14mm f/1.4 Art adapted to the Nikon Z system. I used Megadap’s Sony-to-Nikon adapter for this test – a hollow adapter that does not have any glass elements of its own.

The following crops are from the same percentage of the frame as above. Since the Nikon Z8 has a 45 megapixel sensor compared to 60 megapixels on the Sony a7R V, these crops are a little lower in resolution. This doesn’t make much of a difference to my takeaways, however.

Here’s the center of the frame at f/1.4:

It’s perfect here, nothing to complain about at all. The central performance is just as good on the Nikon Z8 as it was on the Sony a7R V.

However, the story changes when you look at the far corners:

It’s an interesting result. There isn’t any blurring, but rather than being perfect dots, the stars in the corners are little lines instead. At first, I thought this might be an effect of star trailing, so I took another exposure at 2.5 seconds, but they didn’t change size. I can also rule out an adapter alignment issue – had that been the cause, we would have seen more improvement upon stopping down, and it would have looked like out-of-focus blur rather than lines in the first place.

This isn’t the first time I’ve seen corner-related issues when adapting mirrorless lenses across brands. It was even stronger with the Sony 14mm f/1.8 GM. It’s better to use native glass when possible, so that the lens is being used on the sensor stack it was designed for. (Although adapting DSLR lenses to mirrorless cameras does not cause a similar issue, in my experience.)

Even so, the lines in the corners here certainly could have been worse. I found myself taking plenty of photos with the Sigma 14mm f/1.4 Art and Nikon Z8 combo during my time with this lens, and my pictures were completely usable. But I wouldn’t go out of my way to adapt this lens normally and would rather use Nikon’s 20mm f/1.8 S or 14-24mm f/2.8 S if possible.

Flare and Sunstars

Complex 14mm lenses tend to have a lot of flare, but I was pleasantly surprised to see good performance on the Sigma 14mm f/1.4 Art. Here’s a very typical example:

The one downside is that I would get dots of flare with this lens when the sun was outside the frame. The lens hood definitely does not provide full protection from off-axis light. Here’s an example from the same scene:

As for sunstars, stopping down to f/16 with this lens will give you beautiful and sharp 22-pointed stars, thanks to the lens’s 11-blade aperture diaphragm.

Has Sigma improved upon the previous generation of this lens? Let’s take a look at how their sharpness measures up in the lab.

It’s not a dramatic difference, but the newer version is definitely sharper, especially in the center and in the corners at wide apertures. This isn’t a surprise based upon what we saw on the previous page of the review, where the Sigma 14mm f/1.4 Art had significantly better coma performance than its predecessor. Still, the older lens is no slouch, and the two are at roughly the same level overall. Midframes actually favor the 14mm f/1.8 Art slightly.

I couldn’t wait to compare these two lenses in the lab! Here’s how the Sigma 14mm f/1.4 Art stacks up against the Sony 14mm f/1.8 GM:

This is very similar performance overall, not far from being interchangeable. At a given aperture, the Sony lens is slightly sharper in the center. However, the Sigma is slightly sharper in the midframes due to less wavy field curvature. The corners are pretty evenly-matched but generally favor the Sigma by a hair.

It’s interesting to me that, for Milky Way photography, I found the Sony 14mm f/1.8 corners to look slightly better than those of the Sigma 14mm f/1.4. You wouldn’t be able to tell that just from the MTF50 LW/PH numbers above, which somewhat favor the Sigma. It highlights the importance of testing Milky Way lenses on their intended subject. Sharpness numbers are correlated with coma performance, but they are not one and the same.

One of my favorite Milky Way lenses is the FE 20mm f/1.8 G, a truly excellent lens in almost every way. Here’s how the two lenses compare in sharpness in the lab.

The Sony 20mm f/1.8 G is the sharpest ultra-wide lens that we have ever tested at Photography Life, and it would have been a huge shock if it lost this comparison. And, indeed, it is sharper than the Sigma 14mm f/1.4 Art in most areas of the frame.

Still, the two lenses are pretty comparable at popular landscape photography apertures from f/8 through f/16. The corners are also similar at wide apertures. In short, both lenses make great choices for Milky Way photography and for landscapes at narrow apertures.

To me, the better choice depends on the photographer. Would you rather have the lightweight Sony 20mm f/1.8 G and its impeccable performance from f/2.8 to f/5.6, or the advanced Milky Way features of the Sigma 14mm f/1.4 Art? I think it could go either way.

Since I reviewed the Sony FE 16-35mm f/2.8 GM earlier this year, I’ve been wanting to see how the Sigma 14mm f/1.4 Art compares. Note that this is not the GM II version of the lens, which is on my shortlist of Sony lenses to review, but rather the original GM version.

In the shared aperture range, the zoom lens measures as slightly sharper in the midframes. However, the prime lens is sharper in the center and a little sharper in the corners (mainly at f/5.6 through f/11). For real-world landscape and Milky Way photography, the Sigma 14mm f/1.4 Art comes out ahead, although the differences aren’t as big as I had expected.

Just to satisfy my curiosity, I wanted to see how the Sigma 14mm f/1.4 Art compares against a “reference” zoom, the Nikon Z 14-24mm f/2.8 S. Can a high-quality prime beat the best ultra-wide zoom? Let’s see:

It’s a pretty close comparison! The Nikon Z lens is sharper in the corners throughout the aperture range, but the Sigma 14mm f/1.4 is sharper in the center. Midframes are pretty similar, except for f/5.6 specifically, where the Nikon Z lens has the advantage. No wonder I’m such a fan of this zoom – it goes toe to toe against a pro-tier prime like the Sigma 14mm f/1.4 Art, arguably even beating it. Not bad!

Lastly, what do you gain with one of the highest-end 14mm primes compared to one of the cheapest? We measured the original Samyang 14mm f/2.8 to find out.

It’s no surprise that the Sigma 14mm f/1.4 Art wins this comparison, but the degree is still impressive. It’s sharper at f/1.4 than the Samyang is at f/2.8. Even so, the Samyang costs just $250. Perhaps the real winner is the photographer who saves their money and gets to travel to some dark sky areas.

Our Recommendation

The Sigma 14mm f/1.4 Art is an extremely specialized, professional-tier Milky Way photography lens. It’s not just the wide focal length of 14mm and the bright maximum aperture of f/1.4. Beyond those (already very useful) features, Sigma has thoughtfully designed this lens in many ways with night photography in mind.

There’s the thermally stable barrel of the lens, so the lens doesn’t expand or contract throughout the night and change your focus point. There’s the manual focus locking switch and variety of other controls – plus the white paint underneath switches that are engaged, so you can see them better at night. And there’s the dedicated section at the front of the barrel for lens heaters, a welcome addition for Milky Way timelapse photographers. From start to finish, everything about this lens is meant to improve your ability to photograph the night sky.

That also applies to image quality, with two caveats. First, the vignetting at f/1.4 is quite high – not really a surprise, but it means that you may want to stop down to f/1.8 or f/2 for better evenness across the frame. Second, for Sony users, the Sony 14mm f/1.8 GM actually has slightly smaller pinpoint stars in the corners of the image. The difference isn’t huge, but the Sony 14mm f/1.8 GM is also a much smaller lens. Since the two lenses cost the same at $1600 apiece, I can see a lot of Sony Milky Way photographers choosing the 14mm f/1.8 GM instead.

Which one is actually better? It depends. The Sony 14mm f/1.8 GM is lighter and has a bit less coma in the corners of the frame. But the Sigma 14mm f/1.4 Art has better quality-of-life features for Milky Way photographers, and it also sports the f/1.4 maximum aperture. Even if you plan to stop down to f/2 or f/2.8 anyway, the ability to focus at f/1.4 is very useful. The Sigma lens also has about 1/3 stop less vignetting at f/1.8 and f/2.

In my Sony 14mm f/1.8 GM review, I called it “arguably the best Milky Way lens ever made.” I would say the same thing about the Sigma 14mm f/1.4 Art. The two lenses are arguing only with each other. No other lens compares, unless you’re comfortable with a fisheye lens and are considering the Sigma 15mm f/1.4 Fisheye Art. Even the best 14-24mm f/2.8 lenses that match these lenses in optical quality are not capable of shooting at f/1.8 or f/1.4.

It’s hard to beat the Sigma 14mm f/1.4 Art for Milky Way photography. Depending on your priorities, it could easily be the best Milky Way lens ever made. But Sigma definitely made some sacrifices to get there.

For starters, it’s a large, heavy lens any way you look at it. Any other ultra-wide on the market will save space in your bag. On top of that, it really isn’t any sharper than a good ultra-wide zoom (like the Sony 16-35mm f/2.8 GM or the Nikon Z 14-24mm f/2.8 S) if you’re planning to shoot at f/2.8 or narrower.

And if you want to stop down to improve your image quality, you still get the benefit of focusing and composing more easily at f/1.4 first.

Something that I didn’t really talk about yet is that it’s also fun to shoot at f/1.4 for normal, non-Milky-Way subjects. There aren’t a lot of lenses that can achieve a shallow depth of field combined with an ultra-wide perspective, and I know there are some interesting, unique photos to be had.

At the end of the day, a lens is a tool, and even a good lens is not going to excel at everything.
